Following a post-doctoral research fellowship with Dr. Francis Collins, Dr. Gutmann joined the faculty in Neurology at he Washington University School of Medicine. His basic science laboratory studies the molecular pathogenesis of brain tumors by analyzing tumor suppressor genes mutated in inherited tumor predisposition syndromes - specifically the neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) and neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) genes. THe insights gained from studying these inherited brain tumor syndromes will shed light on the essential intracellular signaling pathways important for controlling cell growth in the CNS, improve our understanding of the molecular and cellular changes that facilitate tumorigenesis in the brain, and provide a unique opportunity to develop novel management strategies for patients with brain tumors.
